New research suggests that individuals who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"People using such medications must be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a reversion to starting mass within about 18 months.
Weighing Therapies
The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the way of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."
A Chronic Condition?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if a switch activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Use
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Use is more common among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
